Blair Witch Chronicles Collection

Written by Jen Van Meter

Following the 1999 release of Artisan Pictures’ The Blair Witch Project, the world became aware of an urban legend birthed in the dark forests of Burkittsville, Maryland. The Blair Witch Project was a chilling and innovative example of horror cinema, but it was only a part of the story. These unique comic book tales expand on the legend of the Blair Witch, delving deeper into the origins of the mysterious woman Elly Kedward and the influence her presence has had on the small East Coast town over the years. From the murders at Coffin Rock and the tragic story of Rustin Parr, through the ’50s and schoolboy pranks gone wrong to the ’90s and a Wiccan coven’s attempts to cleanse the woods, the true mystery of the Blair Witch has only begun to be unraveled.

In 1785, Elly Kedward was driven out of the Township of Blair in North Central Maryland. A year later, her accusers started disappearing under mysterious circumstances. Fearing Elly had cursed them all, the people of Blair fled, abandoning their town and giving birth to a legend. This one-shot comic works in conjunction with the recently unearthed documentary shot by a film crew who never returned to relate their experience. It fleshes out the mystery, relating the frightening stories of other people who have had run-ins with the mysterious, mythical Blair Witch, a new staple of modern horror. Written by Jennifer Van Meter, it contains three stories by three of comics top illustrators: Guy Davis, Bernie Mireault, and Tommy Lee Edwards.

In the tradition of the film, The Blair Witch Project, and the original Oni Press comic book, this all-new mini-series delves into the legend of horror. Writer/researcher Jen Van Meter has cracked open the dusty history of the Blair Witch and found more first-hand encounters with the mysterious figure. In our opening book, we travel back to the 1950s. A teenage prank in the Black Hills goes horribly wrong, leaving two people dead and the others afraid to talk — until now! Rejoining Jen for this first issue is Guy Davis, one of the artists from the original comic book.

Following the success of the film and comic book, The Blair Witch Project, Oni Press and Artisan entertainment re-team for four new stories inspired by the Blair Witch mythology! It’s the early 1990s, and a group of naïve Wicca have been hired to cleanse the woods of Burkittsville of an evil spirit that has been tormenting the townspeople. Believing that they are working for the greater good, they perform their spells and return home with the hope that their magick worked. What they discover, however, is that they’ve brought a small piece of the curse home with them, and it proves to be their doom.

This was supposed to be a leisurely vacation. Arsenal Hopeless-Savage has a rematch with an old high school rival in a kung-fu tournament in Hong Kong. She and her brother Twitch figured they could turn it into a nice jaunt with their boyfriends to meet their aging grandmother, a renowned Chinese fortune teller. Too bad Grandma Shi didn’t phone ahead to tell them that it was going to be the trip from Hell!

It begins at the airport when a shady character slips something into Arsenal’s bag, putting the quartet on the radar of the local bad guys, the British secret service, and the Hong Kong police. It becomes even more complicated when the rest of the Hopeless-Savage clan decides to join the middle children in Asia, getting caught up in the international intrigue themselves. Arsenal is the only person that can get them all out of the jam they’re in, and for her it’s all too much!

There are few people in our lives who have as much influence on us as our mother and father, brothers and sisters. Family ties are the earliest ties that bind, setting the tone for the paths we will take in our future. So what if your father is Dirk Hopeless and your mother Nikki Savage, a superstar couple from the days of punk rock? When you’re born a rebel, what can you possibly do to make yourself stand apart?

For Rat Hopeless-Savage, the answer is to leave home and start a new life somewhere, become a normal citizen with a nine-to-five job. It’s going pretty well, too, until Dirk and Nikki are kidnapped, and suddenly the family Rat tried so hard to deny needs him more than ever. His siblings – sisters Arsenal and Zero, and brother Twitch – know the Rat of old is the only one who can find their parents, and they’re determined to make him trade his white-washed existence for the leather jacket and spiked hair of his youth. What follows is a madcap race against the clock, and a hilarious look at what happens when alternative lifestyles become the norm.
